Mining the Coal. Coal miners use giant machines to remove coal from the ground. They use two methods surface or underground mining. Many U.S. coal beds are very near the ground s surface and about two-thirds of coal production comes from surface mines. Modern mining methods allow us to easily reach most of our coal reserves.

Large stripping machines with excavating wheels used in surface coal mining are employed in other types of open-pit mines. Water inflow was a very important problem in underground mining until James Watt invented the steam engine in the 18th century. After that steam-driven pumps could be used to remove water from the deep mines of the day.

Coal mining has been performed since the arrival of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-18th century. Coal is used as a fuel primarily for steam-generated electrical power plants as well as being a component of certain industrial applications such as steel manufacturing.

In modern longwall mines shearers use cutting disks on ranging arms to slice through all the coal in the seam. Shearers can have two cutting disks and work like bacon-slicers in removing the coal from the face. However ever since the introduction of continuous miners in the late 1940s room-and-pillar continuous mining has been gaining ground over conventional room-and-pillar mining.
